Analysing the Impact of Designed Accessibilities and the Introduction of New Technologies Resorting to a Spatial Interaction Model with Land Use
Foi apresentado no 48th Congress of the European Regional Science Association, ERSA 2008, em Liverpool, o trabalho de Paulo Silveira, Research Fellow da Direcção Regional da Ciência e Tecnologia, Azores University, Angra do Heroísmo, com o título:"Analysing the Impact of Designed Accessibilities and the Introduction of New Technologies Resorting to a Spatial Interaction Model with Land Use. An Application to Terceira Island".
Sustainable development is closely linked with land use. Changes in land use reveal the interactions between man and the environment, through technology, and constitute an important referential to see the effects of the environment on human values and institutions. Furthermore the spatial referential, explicit in the interaction between man and the environment, reveals the various scales where those processes occurred, highlighting also the identity, place and scope of those who interpret the environmental processes, of those who act upon that environment, and also of those who suffer the consequences of the impacts that result from such acts. In this article we use a spatial interaction model with land use to understand the organization of rural and urban spaces, taking into account land aptitudes and public intervention on the design of accessibilities. The objective is to understand the interaction between the economy and the territory, trying to appreciate the environmental, technological, economic and regulatory factors that affect land use. This will allow not only a better understanding of the reality but also can be used to generate better information to help the design of medium and long term policies, in order to promote the sustainable development at a regional and local level.
